This ranch-style residence surrounded by the mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was Mella Kernan Architect's first project in the West.
Located in Shooting Star, at the base of the Teton Village ski resort, the site offers 360° views of the mountains.
After extensive study of local building traditions and materials, a design was developed to complement the site. A team of experts was assembled to guide the project through the local authorities and into construction. The best craftspeople in the area brought their knowledge of new and reclaimed, indigenous materials to the project.
By encouraging idea-sharing and open communication, the design evolved. A group of structures, influenced by native, historical buildings, cluster about a round, glass, living room, that offers panoramic views of the mountains. The building provides a haven from the long, severe winters. Every element was carefully considered. The project is filled with innovative detail in its stonework; detailed woodwork; intricate metalwork and the invisible inclusion of complex mechanical systems.
The result is a cozy home that feels as if it has always been there.
