This New England farmhouse sits on a rocky site near a pond. The beauty of the building comes from its proportions, clear structure and simple materials. Mella Kernan Architects' goal was to emphasize these features with the new work.
A new foyer, dining room and living room with a master bedroom suite above, were added. A new mud room connects the house to the new garage with a family room above. Covered porches were added and the site was reconfigured to include a pool.
Later the property was sold. New clients bring a new vision. The new Owners wanted to open up the first floor of the original house as a large kitchen with a fireplace.
The new Owners later wanted to build a guest house / pool house. The site was too restricted to accommodate a separate structure. Mella's solution was to carve out the rock, creating room for an addition that would accommodate the poolhouse, with large steel windows facing the pool, on the first floor; and a self-contained guest suite above.
